Do I Need an Extraction?

At our practice, we're passionate about preserving your natural smile whenever possible. This helps maintain your dental structure and alignment. However, we may recommend tooth extraction for several reasons. Some common reasons for needing a tooth extraction include:

  • Preparing for dentures to restore the appearance and function of your smile
  • Removing extremely decayed teeth that can't be saved with root canal therapy
  • Treating a dental accident or severe trauma with deep vertical cracks
  • Removing overcrowded teeth to prepare for orthodontic treatment

We try to provide extractions within a single convenient visit, using an approach that is both efficient and dedicated to maximizing your comfort. We also offer wisdom teeth removal, but only if they have erupted. Our dentist also has the specialized skills to provide bone preservation treatments during your visit if you decide that you want an implant down the road.

Our Montville Tooth Extraction Process

extractions in MontvilleOnce we've determined that you need an extraction, we can complete the procedure in a single visit to save you time and money. To prepare you for the extraction, our dentist uses digital x-rays and other imaging technology to examine the tooth and establish a plan for a successful extraction.

At the onset of the procedure, our dentist will numb the area as needed. He then removes the affected tooth or teeth and places gauze to secure the tissue while it heals. While we do not provide restorations at our office, we can perform additional pretreatments at the time of your extraction, such as bone grafting to prepare the jaw for dental implants in the future. Bone preservation is preventive and minimally invasive since the space left by the tooth has already been created.

Sedation Dentistry to Enhance Comfort

At Montville Periodontics & Implantology, we know that visiting a dentist for extraction can be stressful, particularly if you're dealing with other dental health problems. Our team does everything possible to make your experience easier for you, including bringing in a trusted anesthesiologist. We provide two levels of dental sedation to help you feel relaxed during your treatment.

  • Nitrous Oxide Sedation: We offer laughing gas or nitrous oxide sedation to deliver a light sedation effect that's helpful during treatment. It helps you relax and can reduce or eliminate feelings of anxiety during the extraction. However, you'll remain awake, alert, and able to talk with the dentist.
  • Oral Conscious Sedation: The oral conscious option offers a deeper level of sedation to ensure a more comfortable treatment experience. It helps you feel calm and comfortable enough to doze off during treatment. We recommend you have someone to drive you to and from the treatment since the sedation takes some time to wear off.
